Today, we’re here to tell the story of Mirko Galafassi, a 62-year-old engineer living in Kilchberg, Switzerland but originally from Varese. We reach him by phone, to get to know him better and allow him to share his experience at Comano Terme.
He has atopic dermatitis on his hands. It all started in 2018, with the sudden appearance of a fissure in his left thumb. Mirko shares, “That initial warning was just the beginning of a real ordeal, because within six months, the cracks and fissures rapidly spread to nearly all of my fingers, which was extremely challenging to deal with”.
The search for a solution led him, as usually happens in these cases, to go to a specialist. “I chose to rely on the help of the Dermatology Clinic at the University of Zurich,' Mirko continues. “At first, I was prescribed some therapies based on creams and applications of UVA rays," he explains. "then another therapy with Toctino pills (based on vitamin A), a very expensive drug which, according to dermatologists, should have solved the problem, but in reality, it only relieved the formation of fissures on my fingers instead of getting rid of them entirely. This therapy was finally suspended, also due to annoying side effects, such as a rash on my face and head”.
Living with hand dermatitis got worse during the working day. Mirko tells us how the fissures on his fingertips limited his daily work at the computer. To alleviate the discomfort and bleeding caused by frequent keyboard use, he had to wear cotton gloves throughout the day.
He discovered Comano Thermal Baths in 2020, but not before making a further attempt in the form of drug therapy. “The Swiss dermatologists decided to switch me to Dupixent, another very expensive drug (about 500 euros per vial), which I had to inject twice a month. In the meantime, my wife started searching online for alternatives and that's where she found the answer we were looking for: Comano Thermal Baths. So, while I was still taking Dupixent, I booked my first treatment week at your spa”.
We asked Mirko to tell us how his first experience went. “The program included two thermal baths per day. After undergoing treatment, the dermatitis on my fingers immediately improved, and they returned to nearly their normal state”, he shares. “a truly wonderful feeling. However, I returned to Switzerland without being sure whether I should attribute the positive results to the thermal water at Comano or Dupixent. The answer came a few months later, when the fissures returned, despite continuing to take the drug
Visiting the thermal baths in Comano for treatment has become an integral part of Mirko's routine, and it is something he cannot imagine abandoning. He explains it to us in his own words: “I return to Comano once or twice a year, usually in summer and winter, for maintenance purposes. “After a year without taking drugs and one without fissures, I can confidently say that Comano Spa's thermal water works wonders. In my case, it is the only effective way to get rid of my atopic dermatitis,” he affirms.
Mirko likes to describe his trips to Comano as a “therapeutic holiday” in all respects: aside from the thermal water, the spa is surrounded by nature in an enchanting and relaxing environment. “What's more, Comano is close to Trento, a beautiful city, as well as Lake Garda, and Andalo, which is great, as I love to ski. All great reasons to come back again and combine business with pleasure”.
